What kind of emotions arose from the heart of Jesus when He saw the grief of Lazarus' sisters along with the mourners who followed them? Scripture says that He groaned in the Spirit, and He was troubled. Jesus, while on earth, was touched by the feelings of our infirmities.

The prophet Isaiah said:

[53:4] But it was our pain he took, and our diseases were put on him: while to us he seemed as one diseased, on whom God's punishment had come.

Isaiah 53:4 (Bible In Basic English)

We are healed from our sin sickness by the ministry of Calvary. I Peter 2:24-25. Hebrews 4:15 bears this out perfectly. It speaks of the feelings of our infirmities. These are our weaknesses. It speaks of the high priest. He is a "great high priest" (Hebrews 4:14). "It was necessary" for Christ to be made in the form of humanity, but He had no sin. (Hebrews 2:17) The high priest was the mediator between God and man. The high priest had to offer animal sacrifices according to God's law. When Jesus came, he became our high priest. In coming in the body of humanity, Jesus understood our weaknesses, and therefore He could extend mercy to us.

Jesus went in sympathy with Mary and Martha. Jesus' tears are precious. Therefore, our tears are precious. Never think that your tears are of no consequence to the one who can perfectly read them. The tears of Jesus flowed from a loving and compassionate heart. Jesus' tears, in this case, are an unforgettable sign of a deep love for Mary and Martha. Jesus carries that same love in His heart for you.
